Western Sydney Mayors Unite to Drive Region’s Growth and Opportunity

In a major step towards building a united and stronger Western Sydney, the City of Parramatta has announced the formation of the Western Sydney Cabinet of Mayors – WESTcom – a new regional alliance aimed at unlocking economic opportunity and driving infrastructure investment across the region.

Set to launch its inaugural roundtable in the third quarter of 2025, WESTcom will bring together mayors from across Western Sydney to advocate for funding, infrastructure, and policies that will transform the region into a global economic and social powerhouse.

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter is spearheading the initiative and called for his fellow local government leaders to unite in seizing the region’s enormous potential.

“We can’t just sit on our hands and become spectators as other regions snap up growth opportunities,” said Cr Zaiter. “This is about advocating as a collective voice to accelerate the growth of Western Sydney – a region stretching from Parramatta to the Blue Mountains, and from Wollondilly to Hawkesbury – with a current gross regional product of over $182 billion and growing.”

Cr Zaiter highlighted the urgency of planning for the region’s future, especially with the anticipated opening of the Western Sydney International Airport, which is expected to be a game-changer for local jobs, trade, tourism, and connectivity.

“Our global potential depends on how councils invest in jobs, housing, infrastructure, education and liveability. We must work together to unlock Western Sydney’s full potential,” he said. “Now is the time to build strength in numbers and position our region as a prime destination for business, travellers, and investors alike.”

With the recent dissolution of the Greater Cities Commission, WESTcom aims to fill the governance gap by aligning Western Sydney councils on key issues such as infrastructure delivery, housing supply, cultural investment, and sustainable urban development.

“We’re looking to build a model of nation-leading governance and a unified voice to secure investment and address the pressures our communities face,” said Cr Zaiter. “Through WESTcom, we will align strategies while respecting the uniqueness of each city, and advocate as one to State and Federal governments.”

Cr Zaiter has issued an open invitation to all Western Sydney mayors to join the forum and collaborate on shaping the region’s future.

“As the Lord Mayor of Parramatta – the geographical heart of Greater Sydney – I am proud to lead this initiative. The sky is the limit if we work together.”

WESTcom is poised to be a transformative force, with the potential to champion Western Sydney on the national and international stage, driving inclusive, sustainable growth for generations to come.
