In a striking political shift, President Donald Trump has ceased all public mention of Elon Musk on his social media platform, Truth Social, signaling an abrupt cooling of their once high-profile alliance.
According to an analysis by Politico, Trump, who had previously praised Musk's role in leading the controversial “Department of Government Efficiency,” posted about the billionaire entrepreneur an average of four times per week during February and March. However, since the start of April, Musk’s name has been noticeably absent from the President’s posts.
Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, was brought in to spearhead aggressive budget-cutting efforts across federal departments, a move that was met with both praise and backlash. While initially hailed as a bold cost-saving initiative, the mass layoffs and department closures drew significant public scrutiny and declining approval ratings.
Simultaneously, Musk has also scaled back his own political activity. Once a near-daily commentator on President Trump via his X (formerly Twitter) platform, Musk has largely refrained from political posts since early April. Sources suggest the billionaire is intentionally stepping away from the spotlight following criticism over his perceived role in the Republican loss in last month’s Wisconsin Supreme Court election.
Within GOP circles, the retreat has not gone unnoticed. Party insiders, speaking on condition of anonymity, now describe Musk as politically “finished, done, gone.” While some still value his influence in the tech and innovation space, his involvement in direct governance is seen by many as a liability moving forward.
The Trump campaign has declined to comment on the cooling relationship. However, strategists note that the President has begun shifting focus toward more traditional conservative allies as the Republican Party prepares for the 2026 midterm elections.
Political observers view the fallout as a cautionary tale of celebrity crossovers into politics—where even high-profile figures like Musk are not immune to the volatile nature of public opinion.
