Stampede During RCB Victory Celebration: 11 Dead, 33 Injured;

Bengaluru, June 5, 2025 – What was meant to be a night of jubilant celebration turned into a horrific tragedy on Wednesday as a massive crowd surge during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) IPL 2025 victory celebration led to a stampede that killed 11 people and injured at least 33 others.

The incident occurred at the iconic M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, where thousands of fans had gathered to celebrate RCB's historic first IPL title win. According to initial reports, the stampede was triggered when a section of the crowd rushed towards the stage area during a fireworks display and live performance.

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene, with people screaming and falling over each other as the crowd became uncontrollable. Emergency services were called in immediately, and the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals. Several of them remain in critical condition.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “The loss of lives due to the tragic incident in Bengaluru is heart-wrenching. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. I pray for the speedy recovery of those injured.”

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also shared his grief: “Deeply saddened by the tragic loss of lives during the RCB celebrations. My condolences to the families of the deceased. We must ensure better crowd control and public safety at such events.”

The Karnataka state government has ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced a compensation of ₹5 lakh each to the families of the deceased and assured that strict action would be taken if any lapses in security arrangements were found.

RCB captain Virat Kohli and team management released a joint statement expressing their devastation over the tragedy. “We are shattered. Cricket is about joy, not sorrow. Our prayers and support are with the affected families,” the statement read.

Security protocols at large public gatherings are expected to come under intense scrutiny following this tragedy. Authorities are urging organizers across the country to review and strengthen crowd management strategies, especially during high-profile sporting and entertainment events.
