Parramatta, NSW — May 27, 2025:
The heart of Parramatta beat with gratitude last week as more than 60 dedicated local volunteers were honoured at the historic Parramatta Town Hall during National Volunteer Week (19–25 May). The City of Parramatta hosted the annual celebration to recognize the tireless efforts of its volunteers who contribute to various services across the local government area.
From restoring native bushland to helping seniors stay socially connected, volunteers have played an instrumental role in shaping a more compassionate and cohesive community. The event acknowledged contributions from Community Care, Library Services, and Bushcare volunteers.
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor, Cr Martin Zaiter, personally thanked the volunteers, calling them “the invisible threads that hold Parramatta together.”
“Our volunteers are our true heroes. Their work doesn’t just support—it inspires. They build bridges between people, places, and generations, showing us the best of humanity every single day,” said Cr Zaiter.
The 2025 National Volunteer Week theme, ‘Connecting Communities’, was echoed in every story shared and service celebrated at the event. With over 400 active Council volunteers currently registered, the City proudly highlighted their diverse roles:
45 Library Services volunteers assist with JP services, computer tutoring, and homework help.
Over 300 Bushcare volunteers meet monthly in 38 groups across the LGA to remove weeds, regenerate native bushland, and boost biodiversity.
66 Community Care volunteers support the Meals on Wheels™ program, social inclusion initiatives, and Over 55’s Leisure and Learning Services.
One standout figure is Philip Marsh, recipient of the 2025 Senior Citizen of the Year award. A retired printing industry veteran, Marsh has been a devoted Community Care volunteer since 2017.
“After retiring from my 55-year career, I found myself with time to give back. Volunteering with the City of Parramatta gave me purpose and connection,” Marsh shared. “I’ve enjoyed working in social inclusion, Meals on Wheels™, and even the Coffee and Lunch Group.”
The City of Parramatta is urging more residents to step forward as volunteers, particularly as communities continue to rebuild and reconnect in the post-COVID era.
