Doha, May 16: India’s star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra created history at the Doha Diamond League by breaching the coveted 90-metre barrier for the first time in his career. Chopra recorded a sensational throw of 90.15 metres, marking a personal best and a significant milestone in Indian athletics.
Despite the historic achievement, Chopra finished second in the event, narrowly missing the top spot to Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic, who threw 90.88 metres to clinch victory.
Chopra’s performance was one of the most anticipated of the evening, and he did not disappoint. His powerful throw not only reaffirmed his status as one of the world’s elite javelin throwers but also brought immense pride to Indian sports fans. This was Chopra’s season debut and he showed no signs of rust, improving on his previous best of 89.94 metres set in 2022.
Fellow Indian athlete Kishore Jena, who also competed in the event, could not reach the finals but gained valuable experience among a world-class field.
Speaking after the event, Chopra said, “Crossing the 90-metre mark has been a long-time goal. I’m happy with the throw, but I know I still have more to improve and achieve.”
The Doha Diamond League served as a strong start to Chopra’s season as he prepares for the Paris Olympics 2024 and other major international competitions. His record-breaking effort is expected to inspire a new generation of Indian athletes and boost the country's hopes on the global athletics stage.
