In a major breakthrough in the high-profile Baba Siddiqui murder case, Canadian authorities have reportedly detained Zeeshan Akhtar, the alleged mastermind behind the killing of the senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader. Sources confirmed that Indian agencies are now in talks with Canadian officials to initiate his extradition to India.
Baba Siddiqui, a prominent NCP leader and former Maharashtra minister, was shot dead earlier this year in a brazen attack that sent shockwaves across political and public circles. The investigation revealed a well-planned conspiracy, allegedly orchestrated by Akhtar, who had fled to Canada soon after the incident.
Officials from India’s Ministry of External Affairs, along with representatives of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), are coordinating with the Canadian government to fast-track the extradition process under the provisions of the existing bilateral treaty between the two nations.
According to sources close to the investigation, Akhtar had been under surveillance by Canadian intelligence agencies following a red corner notice issued by Interpol at the request of Indian authorities. His location was traced to a safe house in Ontario, where he was detained without incident by Canadian federal police.
Indian investigators believe Zeeshan Akhtar played a key role in financing and coordinating the execution of Siddiqui’s murder from abroad, allegedly due to political and business rivalries. Several suspects have already been arrested in India in connection with the case and have reportedly named Akhtar during interrogation.
The Indian government has expressed hope that Akhtar’s extradition will help uncover the full conspiracy behind the assassination and bring all perpetrators to justice.
As of now, Zeeshan Akhtar remains in Canadian custody. Legal proceedings related to his deportation are expected to begin soon.
