The internal rift within the Liberal Party deepened on Wednesday when Northern Territory Senator Jacinta Price refused to express confidence in party leader Sussan Ley.
Price has been under pressure to apologise after her controversial remarks that the Labor government was “deliberately increasing Indian migration to build a vote bank.” Despite calls from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, NSW Liberal leader Mark Speakman, and Shadow Attorney-General Julian Leeser, Price has remained defiant and refused to retract her comments.
When repeatedly asked whether she had confidence in Ley’s leadership, Price dodged the direct question and instead said:
“Those matters are for our party room. My focus is to go forward and to ensure that we’re doing the right thing by the Australian people, which is what we are elected to do.”
Price previously supported Angus Taylor for the Liberal leadership, while former opposition leader Peter Dutton had promised her a cabinet role in the event of a Coalition government. However, under Ley’s leadership, she was demoted from the shadow cabinet.
She stressed that the party should focus on holding the Labor government to account, raising issues such as defence spending and governance failures. At the same time, she admitted that the infighting following her comments was a problem for the party’s leadership itself.
Jacinta Price’s refusal to back Sussan Ley underscores the ongoing leadership crisis and disunity within the Liberal Party following its election defeat. With tensions escalating, questions over Ley’s authority are set to dominate the opposition’s political future.

लिबरल पार्टी के भीतर जारी खींचतान बुधवार को और तेज हो गई जब उत्तरी क्षेत्र की सीनेटर जैसिंटा प्राइस ने अपनी ही नेता सुसान ले पर विश्वास जताने से इंकार कर दिया।
हाल ही में प्राइस ने विवादित बयान दिया था कि "लेबर सरकार जानबूझकर भारतीय प्रवासियों की संख्या बढ़ाकर वोट बैंक तैयार कर रही है"। इस बयान को लेकर उन पर माफी मांगने का भारी दबाव था, लेकिन उन्होंने पीछे हटने से इनकार कर दिया। प्रधानमंत्री एंथनी अल्बानीज़े, एनएसडब्ल्यू लिबरल लीडर मार्क स्पीकमैन और शैडो अटॉर्नी-जनरल जूलियन लीसर सहित कई नेताओं ने उनके बयान की आलोचना की थी।
पत्रकारों ने जब बार-बार पूछा कि क्या उन्हें सुसान ले के नेतृत्व पर भरोसा है, तो प्राइस ने सीधा जवाब देने से बचते हुए कहा—
“ये मुद्दे पार्टी रूम के लिए हैं। मेरा फोकस ऑस्ट्रेलियाई जनता के हित में काम करने और लेबर सरकार को जवाबदेह ठहराने पर है।”
प्राइस ने पहले एंगस टेलर को लिबरल नेतृत्व के लिए समर्थन दिया था, और पूर्व नेता पीटर डटन ने उन्हें भविष्य की सरकार में कैबिनेट पद देने की बात कही थी। लेकिन सुसान ले के नेतृत्व में उन्हें शैडो कैबिनेट से हटा दिया गया।
उन्होंने आगे कहा कि वास्तविक मुद्दों—जैसे रक्षा खर्च और लेबर सरकार की नाकामियां—पर ध्यान केंद्रित करना चाहिए। साथ ही उन्होंने यह भी स्वीकार किया कि उनके बयान के बाद पार्टी के भीतर मची गुटबाज़ी का ज़िम्मा “नेतृत्व” पर है।
जैसिंटा प्राइस का सुसान ले के नेतृत्व पर सवाल खड़ा करना इस बात का संकेत है कि चुनावी हार के बाद भी लिबरल पार्टी एकजुट नहीं हो पाई है। अंदरूनी मतभेद और नेतृत्व संकट ने विपक्ष की चुनौती को और गहरा कर दिया है।
