In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, India has gained strong support from Colombia on the issue of terrorism, following a firm response by Indian MP Dr. Shashi Tharoor. The shift came after Colombia initially issued a statement expressing condolences to Pakistan following India’s successful counter-terror operation, Operation Sindoor.
An Indian all-party parliamentary delegation, currently visiting Colombia’s capital Bogotá, raised strong objections over the South American nation’s initial diplomatic language that appeared sympathetic to Pakistan. Leading the delegation, senior Congress leader and former UN diplomat Dr. Shashi Tharoor conveyed India's deep disappointment at Colombia’s earlier stance.
Dr. Tharoor is reported to have firmly articulated India's position on cross-border terrorism, making it clear that equating the perpetrator with the victim of terrorism is unacceptable. “Terrorism must be condemned unequivocally, regardless of geopolitical alliances,” he stated during closed-door diplomatic engagements.
Following these deliberations, Colombian officials clarified their position and extended unequivocal support to India’s efforts to combat terrorism. A revised statement from Colombia emphasized solidarity with nations fighting terrorism and expressed respect for India’s right to defend its sovereignty and citizens.
The development is being seen as a diplomatic victory for India, showcasing the effectiveness of its multilateral engagements and the power of persuasive diplomacy led by seasoned lawmakers like Dr. Tharoor.
The visit is part of India’s broader outreach to Latin America to build stronger global consensus against terrorism and to foster strategic ties beyond traditional regions.
