A major controversy has erupted in Australian politics after Liberal Party MP Jacinta Price made divisive remarks targeting the Indian community. Price claimed that “there is a concern with the Indian community, because their numbers are large and they vote for Labor.” She went further to suggest that Indian Australians come to the country to collect welfare benefits and that Labor welcomes them purely for political gain.
These remarks sparked outrage among migrant groups, but the strongest condemnation came from Labor MP Dr. Andrew Charlton.
Dr. Charlton called Price’s comments false, offensive, and deeply divisive. In his words:
“Indian Australians are one of the most successful and hardworking migrant groups in our nation. To accuse them in this way is not only untrue but an insult to their enormous contribution.”
He pointed to clear statistics: over half of Indian Australians hold a bachelor’s degree or higher, and around 85 percent are in the workforce — far above the national average.
Dr. Charlton highlighted that Indian Australians are excelling as doctors, engineers, teachers, entrepreneurs, scientists, researchers, and innovators, all of whom strengthen the Australian economy and society every single day.
Referring to his own electorate of Parramatta, he noted:
“The Indian community is the heartbeat of our local story. They establish businesses that create jobs, volunteer in schools, temples, mosques and sporting clubs, and bring vibrancy and diversity to our streets.”
Dr. Charlton accused the Liberal Party of drifting towards extremism and division. He reminded that only recently Labor introduced a motion in the Senate to condemn racism and promote tolerance — a motion the Liberals voted against.
He warned: “This is dangerous and goes against Australian values. We must send a clear message that there is no place for racism in our politics or our future.”
Dr. Charlton addressed the Indian community directly:
“You are welcome, you are valued, and we are deeply grateful for all that you do. Your hard work and achievements make our nation stronger. The comments of some Liberal leaders do not reflect the views of the majority of Australians. Most Australians know that our diversity is our greatest strength.”

उन्होंने यह भी आरोप लगाया कि भारतीय समुदाय यहां कल्याणकारी योजनाओं का लाभ लेने आया है और लेबर पार्टी उन्हें राजनीतिक लाभ के लिए बढ़ावा देती है। इस बयान पर लिबरल पार्टी की नेता सुसान ले ने कोई प्रतिक्रिया नहीं दी। एंड्रयू चार्लटन, सांसद (लेबर) ने इस चुप्पी को “शर्मनाक” करार दिया।
चार्लटन ने कहा कि ये आरोप पूरी तरह गलत और अपमानजनक हैं। उन्होंने आँकड़े पेश करते हुए बताया कि आधे से ज्यादा भारतीय ऑस्ट्रेलियाई स्नातक या उच्चतर डिग्री धारक हैं और लगभग 85 प्रतिशत कार्यबल में सक्रिय हैं—जो राष्ट्रीय औसत से कहीं अधिक है। “भारतीय ऑस्ट्रेलियाई डॉक्टर, इंजीनियर, शिक्षक, व्यवसायी, वैज्ञानिक और नवप्रवर्तक हैं। वे हर दिन हमारी अर्थव्यवस्था और समाज को मज़बूत बनाते हैं,” चार्लटन ने कहा।
चार्लटन, जो पररामट्टा का प्रतिनिधित्व करते हैं, ने कहा कि वहाँ भारतीय समुदाय स्थानीय जीवन का अभिन्न हिस्सा है। “वे व्यापार खड़े करते हैं, नौकरियाँ पैदा करते हैं, स्कूलों और धार्मिक स्थलों पर स्वयंसेवा करते हैं और हमारी गलियों में रंग व विविधता लाते हैं। उन्हें यह संदेश मिलना चाहिए कि वे यहाँ स्वागत योग्य हैं और उनके योगदान की सराहना की जाती है।”
चार्लटन ने कहा कि रविवार को हुई एक रैली में भी विभाजन और बहिष्कार को बढ़ावा दिया गया, जिसे अधिकांश ऑस्ट्रेलियाई सही नहीं मानते। इसी कारण लेबर ने सीनेट में एक प्रस्ताव का समर्थन किया, जिसमें सभी दलों से नस्लवाद की निंदा करने को कहा गया। लेकिन लिबरल पार्टी ने इसके खिलाफ वोट किया।
चार्लटन ने चेतावनी दी कि लिबरल पार्टी का यह रुख खतरनाक है और देश को चरमपंथ की ओर धकेलता है। उन्होंने कहा, “ऑस्ट्रेलिया की असली ताकत हमारी विविधता है। हमें बहुसंस्कृतिवाद को कमज़ोर नहीं, बल्कि संरक्षित करना चाहिए। नस्लवाद की राजनीति को कोई जगह नहीं मिलनी चाहिए।”
उन्होंने सभी ऑस्ट्रेलियाई नागरिकों से अपील की कि वे एकजुट होकर बहुसंस्कृतिवाद का समर्थन करें और स्पष्ट संदेश दें कि “हमारे भविष्य में विभाजन और नस्लवाद के लिए कोई स्थान नहीं है।”
